Once we crossed ~$30k MRR, the 2% Shopify Payments fee plus app subscriptions started really biting. Migrated to Shopify Plus eventually.
Set up a store in two days. Themes look polished out of the box. The app marketplace solves most edge cases.
I've been fully remote since day one across three roles. Async docs, written decisions, no surprise 'come back to the office' announcements yet.
After the 2023 reductions some teams never fully recovered. Surviving people doubled up on workloads. New leadership cohort is rebuilding but it'll take time.
Talking to real shop owners daily and seeing the impact of a feature on their business is rewarding. Lots of trust to run experiments.
When I joined four years ago we shipped weekly. Now releases involve more coordination across teams. Still ship fast by industry standards, but the small-company feel is gone.
ICs get real decision-making latitude. The downside is the company restructures itself roughly every 18 months — your priorities can shift overnight. I've enjoyed the work, but if you crave stability this isn't it.
